Mundum Kirat Cultural Trail Trekking  Route

Mundum Trail treks are different from other popular routes and more of an exploration. This new adventure is perfect for all age groups to enjoy the scenic and cultural country walks. The Mundum Trail trekking route includes a visit to the famous Halesi Maratika Templestandson a high hill between the Dudh Koshi and Sun Koshi Rivers. Situated next to numerous caves, it is a holy pilgrimage site for Hindu and Buddhist followers. The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and the caves of Halesi is revered as a sacred spot.

This is where the 7th-century saint Padamasamava or Guru Rinpoche meditated for some years. Which makes it a special holy pilgrimage site for the Buddhist followers also. It is an interesting place to observe a blend of Hindu and Buddhist religions and cultures on this spot. After an exciting time and visiting the Halesi Maratika Temple and holy caves, the adventure starts heading towards higher green hills.

The trek starts from the hill farm village of Chakhewa Bhanjyang, where the air gets colder along with glorious views. The walk follows the high scenic ridges towards the crystal-clear ponds of Has and Salpa Pokhari. To reach the highest point of the adventure at Silichung Hilltop, situated close above the Salpa Pokhari. It also forms the boundaries of the Bhojpur, Khotang, and Solu-Khumbu districts, situated amidst an enchanting forest of rhododendrons and pine trees.

At Silichung, a free day to enjoy short hiking and explore the raw and virgin country of the eastern Himalayas. The top ridge of Silichung offers spectacular views of the world’s five highest peaks. Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu, and Mt. Makalu as far as Mt. Kanchenjunga in the Far East direction.

After an enjoyable and exciting adventure on the highest spot of the treks, the return journey heads towards the Khotang and Solu-Khumbu districts just in the lap of Mount Everest and Khumbu Himalayan belt.

From Dhap a long and interesting drive brings you to the hustle and bustle of the city life of Kathmandu. Then concludes our fabulous adventure after a most overwhelming experience on Mundum Trail Trekking.

 

Best seasons for Mundum Kirat Cultural Trail Trekking :

The best time for this wonderful adventure is mid-spring and autumn to pre-winter seasons. Spring, from March to May, and autumn/fall begins in September, and end in November. Interested trekkers can visit during the pre-winter time of early December when days clear but cold morning and night time.

Springtime from March to May is lively when wildflowers are in seasonal bloom, especially the rhododendrons and orchids of various species. Enjoy the colorful wildflowers with rhododendrons of various species around the high hills of Mundum and Salpa Bhanjyang from March to May. In the spring season when most days are clear with longer sunshine hours, it can get overcast in the afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitudes, as well on passes. 

Autumn/fall from September to November is another best time for this trek with fine days, and clear blue sky for views and walks. But days are shorter due to sunlight hours, temperatures drop to a cold morning, late afternoon, and nighttime around higher elevations, but clear starry nights.

 

Mundum Kirat Cultural diversity,

From Lower Solu district onward, around eastern mid-hills and south of Everest. The Eastern people are of mixed peoples, mostly Kirat Rai, Gurung, Magar, and Tamang as well as Chettries and Brahmin and Newar communities. The mid-hills around Solu, Khotang, and close to Bhojpur district practice Hindu and Buddhist religions with impressive Nepalese culture.

As you enter Solu-Khumbu, southern areas of Mt. Everest from Khotang town and village en route to Mundum Trail. The higher region is populated with Sherpa, the highlanders follow the Buddhist religion of age-old heritage and colorful culture.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu 1,350 m and transfer to hotel.
Day 02: Sightseeing and Trek Preparation.
Day 03: Drive to Halesi Maratika Temple and stay at the Guest House. About 8 hour’s drive.
Day 04: After Visiting the Temple and driving to Chakhewa Bhanjyang 2,300 trek to Tamke Danda (3010 meters) about a 4-hour drive and a 2-hour trek.
Day 05: Trek to Dhotre 2,752 m-05 hrs.
Day 06: Trek to Maiyung Has Pokhari 3122 m-05 hrs.
Day 07: Trek to Rawa Dhap 3,426 m-06 hrs.
Day 08: Trek to KuluPankha Bhanjyang near Salpa Pokhari 3,348 m-06 hrs.
Day 09: Side trip to Silichung Hill 4165 and rest on Kulupankha Bhanjyang
Day 10: Trek to Ghyankharka 3,612 m via Runa Danda-06 hrs.

    On arrival at Kathmandu airport receive an airport transfer to Hotel, Rest, and a free day at Kathmandu.

    The morning after breakfast, our city guide takes you on an exciting tour around places of great historical and cultural interest. Kathmandu and adjoining cities are steeped with World Heritage Sites, and visit of old Durbar Square palace courtyard. Located in the heart of Kathmandu city, and then a tour of Swyambhunath Stupa. One of the oldest Buddhist monuments with a 2,600-year-old history as well as a famous landmark of the country. The tour extends to the holy Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, and the visit of the large Bouddhanath Stupa.

    After an enjoyable and wonderful tour back to the hotel, the rest of the afternoon at leisure and preparation for the trek.

    Early Breakfast and start the long driving journey to Halesi Maratika temple distance of approx. 213 km following the pleasant highway until Dhulikhel Town. Then on winding downhill towards B.P. Highway and then the route diverts heading northeast.

    The drive heads up and down through rural farm villages and towns to reach the exciting town of Halesi. On arrival by late evening transfer into a nice small local lodge on time for a refreshing dinner.

    The morning before breakfast visit Halesi Martial Temple and the holy caves. Climb on stone steps to the top where the temple is located, one of the most important pilgrimage sites. For Hindu followers as well as for Buddhist devotees, the temple is made of tough hard rocks. Situated amidst dense forest surroundings, visit the temple dedicated to Hindu God Lord Shiva also known as Halesi Mahadev. After getting blessed by the priest visit various caves the first Swargdwar or entrance to heaven. Then Janmadwar/birth entrance, similarly Paapdwar the sin entrance and Dharmadwar entrance to religion and visit Paravtithan a place of Goddess Parvati.

    One of these channels of the cave was also a spot where 7th Century saint Padmasamva or Guru Rinpoche mediated. Which makes it an important holy site for Buddhist followers, apart from a religious background. The hill and cave of Halesi Mahadev is located on a scenic hilltop facing views of surrounding landscapes.

    After a glorious morning feeling in the Great Spirit with the blessing from the priests, enjoy a refreshing breakfast. The board in vehicles for another exciting drive to Chekwa Bhanjyang Village. The rough country road follows winding ups on leaving the Halesi and Diktel areas.

    The drive heads through a rural farm village to reach Chekwa Bhanjyang village, for a simple short lunch stop. From here the Mundum Trail begins as the air gets much cooler being around a high ridge. The walk follows along a ridge line for a few hours facing outmost views of the surrounding dramatic landscapes.

    The reaching our overnight camp at Tamke Danda, situated on a high ridge, our tented camp is set on a grassy meadow stay overnight at Camp.

    From Tamke Danda near Chekwa Bhanjyang, our adventure starts following the Mundum High Trail. The walk heads past smaller farm settlements with tended terraces with seasonal vegetables. Trek continues on the high ridges of Mundum facing the grand scenery of surrounding beautiful landscapes as well as snow peaks in the distance. 

    After a short descent, then the walk follows a higher route as the climb starts towards a forested area. Covered with rhododendron trees, as walk continues to reach a high ridge. From here downhill to a small farm settlement of cattle herders for overnight camps. Where all meals are prepared by our expert camping cook and kitchen staff. A lovely spot of Dhotre amidst serene surroundings with views of distant snow peaks stay overnight at Camp.

    Start the morning from Dhotre on a nice scenic path following the Mundum ridges and into a forested area. From here onward walking within sheer wilderness away from farm villages and human settlements for some days. The walk came across a few cattle herder temporary shelters around the summer grazing area to Maiyung for overnight camp. Located on an open grassy field amidst forest surroundings and close to Hans Pokhari, which is an hour's walk from the camp stay overnight at Camp.

    From this isolated spot starts with a short up to reach a small clear pond called Hans Pokhari, where the trail from Pakhuwa Bhanjyang joins which is an alternative route to Bhojpur district. The name Hans Pokhari means a place for migratory ducks that often makes a temporary habilitation. From here after a refreshing stop climb a steep hill for some hours to Satdobato at 3,122 m high, which means a junction of seven paths, and then a short walk to Hykule.

    After a pleasant stop at Hykule, within the heart of Mundum High Trail, from here the walk leads en route to Salpa Pass or Bhanjyang. The walk follows on the high ridge amidst a lovely shade of rhododendron and Bamboos Forest.

    The walk then leads past several temporary shelters of cattle herder camp to Rawa-Dhap for overnight camp. One of the highest spots for overnight camping after walking past a small hill with ups and downs to reach this scenic spot at Rawa-Dhap overnight at Camp.

    The morning walk leads uphill most of the way into bamboo and rhododendron forest, leaving the very end of Mundum ridge as the climb leads above within a cool area close to Salpa Pass. The climb continues into forested areas past the cattle herder temporary camp then ends the day at KuluPankha Bhanjyang (Salpa Bhanjyang) for an overnight Camp.

    Enjoy a free day around this scenic location of Kulu Pankha Bhanjyang, having breakfast. Follow the guide, carrying a packed lunch for day hiking of 3-4 hours or more, depending upon the clear weather. The small path follows close to the calm lake of Salpa Pokhari, where the annual religious festival takes place. During the monsoon time of August, Hindu devotees and pilgrims visit for a holy bath and dip in the pond of Salpa.  

    From Salpa Pokhari few hours of steep climb reach the highest point of the Mundum Trail Trekking. On a clear day spectacular view of the mid-eastern Himalayas with Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and as far as Kanchenjunga. Includes grand scenery of surrounding beautiful landscapes of rolling green hills and valleys. After a marvelous moment return downhill towards Kulu Bhanjyang for overnight camp.

    From here onwards trek leads higher on leaving the end of Mundum Trail. The walk follows to a short down across cattle herder summer shelters as the route then climbs higher. Then reach a wide-open ridge where Ghyankharka is located. Enjoy another highest overnight camping spot, much higher than the previous camp of KuluBhanjyang. Enjoy the superb surrounding scenery of hills and valleys with snow-capped peaks and stay overnight at Camp.

    Enjoy the last day around the high-altitude areas of the eastern Himalayan region, from here the journey follows to mid-hills. On leaving the highest spot of GhyanKharka, heading down toward Khotnag district and close to Solu Khumbu areas.

    The walk heads down on a winding path through dense woods and then a short climb reaching on top of Dharma Danda rewards excellent views of surrounding landscapes with views of distant snow-capped peaks.

    After a scenic moment, a slow and gradual descent brings you to a small village at Deurali for overnight camp.

    Enjoy the last day of trekking around the eastern hills of southern Everest and Makalu Himalayan range. On leaving Deurali behind through the lovely wild forest toward Thamdanda Hill cool shade of the forest.

    The walk continues coming across more forest then slowly the day ends on reaching Danda Kharka for the last overnight in tented camping.

    The morning after clearing the camps, enjoying the last camping breakfast, then board in vehicle for an exciting drive to Dhap. The drive continues downhill heading southwest through the local villages to the deep valley of the Dudhkost river bank. Crossing the Dudhksi river and driving along the local village lead to the top of Nele Bazaar and continue to Salleri headquarters of Solukhumbu district.

    Leaving Salleri Bazaar behind, the drive leads through several countryside villages, with beautiful landscapes, and valleys to reach Dhap Bazaar. Arriving by late afternoon on time for dinner transfer to a nice simple lodge. On a clear day view of Everest and Numbur Chuli is visible from Dhap as it reminds you of the wonderful adventure now Mundum Trail trekking connects you with another cultural trekking Pikey Peak Trekking route stay overnight at Dhap at Lodge.

    From Dhapdriving to an interesting overland journey to Kathmandu. An early morning start for a scenic drive, as the road follows over hills and valleys. The journey heads through farm villages and towns, then reaches the main highway. Where a smooth and nice drive brings you back to Kathmandu. Reaching the hotel by late evening by dinner time, after a long and interesting overland journey stay overnight at Hotel Kathmandu.
